Citywide Clean-Up

General Information
Storm Lake's Citywide Cleanup Program is run about every five years and provides residents with an opportunity to clean up their properties and dispose of unwanted items at reduced prices or for free in many cases. The next Citywide Cleanup is scheduled for April/May 2015. The scheduled pick up dates are as follows:

PLEASE NOTE:  CREWS WILL ONLY GO DOWN EACH STREET 1 TIME - NO EXCEPTIONS - ALL ITEMS NOT OUT WHEN THE CREWS GO BY WILL NOT BE PICKED UP

Zone #1 - All areas WEST of Lake Avenue (including houses on the west side of Lake Avenue) will be picked up starting April 27th, 2015. Items to be picked up must be placed by the curb (not in the street) by 7:00AM on April 27th.

Zone #2 - All areas EAST of Lake Avenue (including houses on the east side of Lake Avenue) will be picked up starting May 11th, 2015. Items to be picked up must be placed by the curb (not in the street) by 7:00AM on May 11th.

The complete details of the program are listed on this page to help property owners ensure that they are in compliance with the program regulations. All items listed here apply to the 2015 program. Please review each of the following sections (outlining several sections of the program) for additional details.

This program is only for Storm Lake residents. No commercial businesses will be included in the pickup and items can not be brought into Storm Lake from other communities or the rural area. Individuals found bringing items in from outside of Storm Lake will be subject to littering fines and penalties.

Hazardous Chemicals
Hazardous chemicals will NOT be picked up as part of this program. These items must be disposed of properly and require special treatment and handling. There will be a Hazardous Chemical Clean Up day during the Citywide Cleanup Program on April 29th. This program is run by the Buena Vista County Recycle Center (712-732-7171 or www.bvcorecycling.com).

BV County Recycle Center requires appointments for all Household Hazardous Cleanup events.

Curbside Pickup Program
The curbside pickup program is the key element of the Citywide Cleanup event. During this part of the program City crews will be going down each residential street and picking up qualifying items only. Qualifying items must be placed in two separate piles as follows:
Pile #1 - Metal items including appliances (see Appliance section for more information)
Pile #2 - Non-Metal items

The following items are prohibited (not allowed) and will NOT be picked up as part of the curbside pickup program (please note:Review further sections of this web page for ways to dispose of some of these items):
A Lot of Garbage
  • Tires
  • Televisions
  • Computers
  • Batteries (Car/Truck etc.)
  • Junk Cars (including riding lawn mowers)
  • Car Parts
  • Building Materials (drywall, sheet rock, lumber, shingles)
  • Hazardous Materials
  • Chemicals and/or explosives (no propane tanks)
  • No household garbage
  • No garbage bags
Some of the items above will be handled by the overall Citywide Cleanup Program in a different manner - please see the other sections of this web page for more information.

City crews will only go down each street once, items placed by the curb after the crew has gone by will NOT be picked up and will be the responsibility of the property owner to dispose of.

Items placed by the curb that are not allowed or part of the curbside pickup will be left and will be the responsibility of the property owner to dispose of.

All items for curbside pickup should be placed by 7:00AM of the first day of the pickup. Again once city crews have been down the street they will not come back.

Appliances

Appliances will be picked up via the Curbside portion of the Citywide Cleanup Program. All appliances that are picked up must have an approved City of Storm Lake "Appliance Sticker" on them. Stickers can be purchased at City Hall (620 Erie Street) starting on April 1st, 2015 for the 2015 Citywide Cleanup Program for $5.00 per sticker.

When purchasing a sticker you will be required to show proof of residency in Storm Lake and the address where the appliance will be placed for curbside pickup.

All appliances that are placed for curbside pickup must have their doors removed and must not have anything inside the appliance!

The sticker should be applied to the appliance on the side facing the street so that the sticker is visible to the crews picking up items. Hidden stickers may result in the item being left at the curb.

Appliances without stickers will NOT be picked up and will become the property owners responsibility to dispose of.

The following items are considered appliances and WILL require an "Appliance Sticker" for pickup:
  • Refrigerators
  • Stoves
  • Ovens
  • Dishwashers
  • Water Heaters
  • Water Softeners
  • Microwaves
  • Freezers
  • Washing Machines
  • Dryers
  • Window Air Conditioners
  • Dehumidifiers
  • Humidifiers
Televisions
Televisions (TV's) will NOT be picked up at the curb or as part of the Curbside Pickup portion of the City Wide Clean Up. TV's will be accepted at the BV County Recycling Center during normal business hours during the Citywide Cleanup dates starting on April 27th and ending on May 22nd, 2015.

All TV's being dropped off under this program will require a City of Storm Lake "TV Coupon" with the TV to be dropped off at the Recycle Center without paying the normal Recycle Center Fees.

"TV Coupons" can be purchased at City Hall (620 Erie Street) in Storm Lake beginning April 1, 2015 for $5.00 each. When purchasing a coupon you will be required to show proof of residency in Storm Lake.

Tires
Tires will NOT be picked up as part of the Curbside Pickup portion of the Citywide Cleanup Program. Tires will be accepted at the BV County Recycling Center during normal business hours during the Citywide Cleanup dates starting on April 27th and ending on May 22, 2015.

All tires being dropped off under this program will require a City of Storm Lake "Tire Coupon" with the tire. All tires should have the rims removed - tires with rims will NOT be accepted with or without a "Tire Coupon".

"Tire Coupons" can be purchased at City Hall (620 Erie Street) in Storm Lake beginning April 1, 2015 for $2.00 each. When purchasing a Coupon you will be required to show proof of residency in Storm Lake.

Computers & Computer Equipment

Computers and computer equipment will NOT be picked up by the curbside pickup program.

Residents who have computers and computer equipment including scanners, monitors, and printers that they want to dispose of can bring them to the Goodwill Center on West Milwaukee in Storm Lake. The Goodwill Center will take the computer items at no cost at any time during the year.

Brush and Yard Waste
Brush and Yard Waste (tree limbs, leaves, grass clippings) are always accepted at the BV County Recycle Center at no cost. You must bring the items to the recycle center during their normal business hours (they do extend hours during the summer months to include some late nights and weekends).
