The Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office received some complaints last weekend regarding private parties and gatherings at private homes of groups larger than 10 in areas of the county. In reviewing the Governor’s Emergency Proclamation, it appears that private residences are included. The proclamation states that Iowan’s shall not have “social gatherings” of more than 10 people. The Proclamation assigns enforcement of the provisions to local law enforcement.
Iowa Code provides a penalty section (135.38) appropriate for filing a charge for those holding such gathering. Additionally, a charge of “Interference with Official Acts” can also apply if a person refuses to break up a party or refuses to leave.
The City of Storm Lake, through the Storm Lake Police Department, will follow up on complaints of any “social gatherings.” If confirmed that more than 10 people are inside, contact will likely be made with the owner or persons responsible for the gathering and order them to immediately disperse.
The disruption and inconvenience to our daily lives is difficult and unsettling. According to Federal and State sources, we are facing a challenging time in the next few weeks regarding the coronavirus. It is critical for our community that social distancing is taken seriously and followed for the health and welfare of all residents.
Updated information will be released when available. We are committed to being Storm Lake Proud together!
