The annual Keep the Wreath Red campaign has concluded for the year. From December 1 to January 1, the Storm Lake Fire Department responded to three structure fires, each represented by a white bulb on the wreath. While the holiday season has come to an end, it is important to remember that January and February remain peak months for home fires - largely due to the increased use of heating appliances such as space heaters.
Space heaters and home heating systems provide essential warmth during winter months, but they are also leading causes of residential fires when not used properly. Always keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from space heaters, fireplaces, wood stoves, and heating vents. Place space heaters on a flat, stable surface, plug them directly into a wall outlet, and turn them off when leaving the room or going to bed. Have your furnace, chimney, and other heating appliances inspected and serviced regularly, and change furnace filters as recommended. Never use ovens or grills to heat your home and always ensure fireplaces and fuel-burning appliances are properly vented. Install and maintain working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors on every level of your home. Practicing safe heating habits can significantly reduce the risk of fires, carbon monoxide exposure, and injuries, helping keep your home and family safe all winter long.
