The State of Iowa will be taking the Automated Weather Observation System (AWOS) down on Monday, May 14, 2012 to replace the existing equipment.
The Automated Weather Observation System is owned by the State of Iowa and located at the Storm Lake Municipal Airport.
The system is the source of weather information including wind speeds, temperature, and humidity used by many local weather systems, including regional TV stations, for reporting Storm Lake weather highlights.
During the replacement process this weather information will not be available.
The replacement process is expected to begin on May 7th and last around three to four weeks.
Replacement of the AWOS unit will provide a more reliable weather system utilizing the newest technology for pilot, news agencies, and the public.
The project which is estimated to cost over $100,000 is being funded with state and federal funds.
Updates on the AWOS upgrade project as well as additional information on the AWOS unit can be found on the City of Storm Lake web page at www.stormlake.org/AWOS.
