The department is introducing limited-edition “Fight for a Cure” SLPD Breast Cancer Awareness Stickers to raise funds and awareness for the cause. Stickers will be available at the Police Department, 401 E. Milwaukee, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays, all during the month of October.
For just $3 each, the public can purchase and display a sticker to show support for those facing cancer and cancer survivors in our community.
All funds from purchases will go directly to the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center Oncology Department for ongoing cancer patient services.
“For the last couple of years, the department has tried to do little things to show support for breast cancer awareness, such as pink bracelets or wearing a pink bar on our uniforms during October,” said Detective Bre Nieland, who is heading up the project along with Police Lt. Alyssa Solem. “It seems like everyone always enjoys stickers, so we decided to try that this year.”
For Det. Nieland, the project has personal significance. “My mom is a breast cancer survivor. She was diagnosed twice, and is a survivor twice because it was caught early through mammograms. So October has a lot of meaning for us, and we’re big supporters of those regular routine health screenings.”
