[ARCHIVED] SLFD launches Junior Firefighter program

STORM LAKE FIRE DEPARTMENT JUNIOR FIREFIGHTER PROGRAM

A new program will allow young people to learn about local fire and emergency services with hands-on experience.

The Storm Lake Fire Department is offering a Junior Firefighter program – a first for the department. Area young people ages 14-19 may apply.

Members of the Junior Firefighter program will participate in training and activities in much the same way as regular Storm Lake Fire Department members do. The Juniors will be able to respond to calls alongside the fire department members to observe and learn, but they will not participate in live firefighting emergencies.

“This program will be an excellent way to engage younger members of our community,” Fire Chief Glenn Schlesser explains. “Not only can it be an avenue to a career in public safety, the experience offers an opportunity to develop life skills including leadership, self-confidence, teamwork and volunteer service. Working beside City firefighters will help young people to experience first-hand what making a difference in their community is all about.”

Junior Firefighter programs have a proven track record of success in a number of communities around the state and nation. Many of today’s full-time fire chiefs and fire department officers began their career as cadets in a Juniors program.

The SLFD is aiming for an initial class of up to eight cadets to begin training in January.

Applications are available at the Storm Lake Fire Station, 820 Oneida Street, or on the fire department website   at www.stormlake.org/166/Fire-Department. To submit a form electronically, see https://stormlake-work-forms.app.transform.civicplus.com/forms/45694. Parental permission is required.
