This summer will have a special treat, as the band plans to perform an extra Sesquicentennial Concert tentatively set for Sunday, July 2. Did you know the band is virtually as old as the City? The first "official" Storm Lake brass band was playing in 1875, first in the streets, then in an Opera House downtown, on a two-deck stage on the lakefront, and since 1935 in the iconic bandshell at Sunset Park. More details on that special event to come.
This year's season will begin June 4, with concerts every Sunday through July 9, plus the traditional Independence Day eve patriotic program as part of the Star Spangled Spectacular.
Band Board members say that their performer numbers have rebounded nicely from the COVID era, with last year's series well attended by the public as well.
They are particularly happy to see young performers from the area schools joining the band during the summer, bringing a lot of talent, while the longtime members of the band beside them serve as mentors.
