Trees Forever field coordinator Jeff Jensen and Kim Woltman of the Storm Lake Public Works Department coordinated the event. Jensen demonstrated the proper methods for planting and caring for young trees.

Earlier this year, Storm Lake was selected for a $4,000 grant from the Alliant Energy Community Tree Program, part of the “One Million Trees” Initiative. The City sought the grant to help offset some of the tree losses to Emerald Ash Borer and storm damage on public properties around the City.

Twenty trees were planted during the event as part of the program. Storm Lake will continue to work to maintain the tree canopy for the community.

The Alliant Energy program aims to fund planting of one million trees in Iowa and Wisconsin by the end of 2030. So far, more than 458,000 plantings have taken place.

Trees are not only beautiful, the shade they create can save energy. They provide habitat for wildlife, help protect water resources, and reduce greenhouse gases.
