In recognition of Severe Weather Awareness Week, which is scheduled for April 2 through April 6, 2012, and in an effort to promote public awareness, the City of Storm Lake will participate in a state wide voluntary tornado drill.
The tornado drill will take place on Wednesday, April 4, 2012. The Storm Lake and Lakeside tornado sirens will be activated at approximately 10:15am. The sirens will sound for approximately 3 minutes.
At the same time the outdoor sirens are activated the indoor warning system will be tested also. The indoor system is present in schools and some public facilities throughout the community.
If severe weather threatens on Wednesday, April 4, 2012 then the statewide drill will be postponed until Thursday, April 5, 2012.
Beginning on Saturday, April 7, 2012 the City of Storm Lake Tornado Siren System will be tested weekly throughout the summer and fall. The tests will be conducted on Saturdays at 12 noon.
In addition to the internal and external weather warning systems the Storm Lake Fire and Police Departments work together when severe weather is threatening by deploying spotters to assist in locating potential hazards threatening the community.
