[ARCHIVED] Storm Lake Announces Additional Hydrant Flushing

Storm Lake, IA – The City of Storm Lake will be conducting additional intermediate hydrant flushing beginning around 11PM on Tuesday, June 19th and running through Friday, June 22nd, 2012.

Flushing will occur during the evening hours starting at 11PM and completing around 8AM the following morning.

This flushing program continues the process of moving the entire water distribution system through Break Point Chlorination, a normal process which is needed about every two to three years for a system using Chloramination as its treatment process.

During the process it is possible that customers may notice some taste and odor issues until the system is converted back to Chloramination.

During the flushing process the City of Storm Lake recommends that customers check their water supply in the morning from the COLD water supply nearest their water meter and if they notice discoloration or odor to flush their household system for five to seven minutes from that COLD water faucet nearest the water meter.

Should the discoloration or odor continue they can contact the City of Storm Lake at 712-732-8020 and provide their location and the time they noticed the discoloration odor.

During the time when the water supply is being treated through Break Point Chlorination residents who use water for specialized uses, including but not limited to, fish tanks, medical uses, and pools should make sure to test the water prior to use as the water will contain free chlorine residual.

Additional information on this topic is available on the City’s web page at www.stormlake.org/hydrant or by contacting the City of Storm Lake by phone at 712-732-8020.
