Storm Lake Public Safety is reminding motorist and parents that classes resume this week at the Storm Lake Community Schools and the St. Mary’s Parochial Schools. Vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian traffic will increase around all of the school buildings and motorists are asked to be vigilant for the increase in traffic.
It is suggested that driver’s reduce their speed around the school campuses and remain observant for children on bicycles and children and adults’ alike crossing the street.
As a reminder when a pedestrian is in a marked crosswalk that is not otherwise controlled by a traffic light or stop sign, vehicles are required to stop and yield to the pedestrian by Iowa Law.
Parents should remind their children who are riding their bikes to watch out for vehicles and to obey traffic laws.
Children who are walking to and from school should use the “buddy system” when possible, know their established walking route as designated by their parents, use crosswalks at intersections to cross the street and don’t cross the street between parked vehicles.
Storm Lake Public Safety wishes the students, staff and parents a great 2012/13 school year.
